We all love a smooth transition. A button that fades in gracefully, a card that slides up just right, or a modal that feels buttery when it appears it’s these little details that make an interface feel modern and polished.

Sometimes CSS transitions don’t work the way we expect. Instead of being smooth, they stutter. Instead of improving UX, they make it worse. And instead of making our UI feel fast, they slow everything down.

So what’s happening behind the scenes? Why do CSS transitions goes wrong? And more importantly how do we fix them?

Not all CSS properties are created equal when it comes to transitions.

The more elements the browser has to animate, the more work it has to do per frame. On slower devices, this often results in choppy motion.

  Does every single element really need a transition? Sometimes just animating a parent container instead of each child achieves the same effect with less cost.

Ever seen a transition that technically works but just feels “off”? That’s usually because of the easing curve.

Long durations like 2s for a button hover make things feel sluggish.

 For UI interactions, keep transitions short (150–300ms). Use ease or ease-in-out for natural feel. Reserve fancy cubic-bezier curves for special effects.

Sometimes developers mix CSS transitions with JavaScript-based animations (like setTimeout or requestAnimationFrame logic). If not handled carefully, this can cause jank stuttering due to the browser trying to sync two different animation systems.

Is your element positioned (relative, absolute, fixed)?

Is there a parent creating a stacking context?

Are other elements using high z-index + position?

Are you using transform, opacity, filter on parents?

If yes => these might be making your life harder.

Use browser dev tools => right-click => Inspect => check z-index and stacking context in Styles tab.

One more, When you don’t give a z-index, it defaults to auto.

And here’s the deal: auto means "I’ll stay in line with my stacking context." So your element might not get layered properly — even if you think it should.

Be explicit. Don’t just trust the browser.
